Parents are on a constant vigil to find positive role models for their children, and find themselves struggling to make the exposure palatable.  Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa, a clinical psychologist who trained at Bellevue Hospital‘s survivors of political torture program, has really stepped up to the challenge.

Dr. Al-Mutawa has created a series of heroes–in high quality comic books and digital animation–based on the 99 Most Beautiful Names, rooting the character origins and stories in scripture, just as the developers of Superman and Batman did.  Those more familiar characters were created from archetypes in the Bible, and the heroes of The 99 come from archetypes in the Qur’an.  An essay on his project, and an excellent video presentation, is here.  The Origin tale for The 99 is also available as a free digital comic book, here.

I am honored that Dr. Naif Al-Mutawa has become a friend of the project.
